Apple Porridge

Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha make up a British overseas territory in the Atlantic Ocean. Ascension and Saint Helena are their own islands, but Tristan da Cunha is made up of many islands. They are spaced pretty far apart, and this gives them varying climates. Tristan da Cunha is south of South Africa, so it gets pretty cold. Ascension, on the other hand, is near the equator. I don't know why they are combined into one territory, but it's pretty disperse.
Until 2009, the territory was called Saint Helena and Dependencies. A new constitution came about, making Saint Helena, Tristan da Cunha, and Ascension equal. Saint Helena has a governor, while the other two have administrators. These ensure that everyone has equal rights and freedoms.
Here are some fast facts about the three parts of the territory:
  • population: 4,300
  • ethnic groups: 50% African, 25% Chinese, 25% British
  • religion: Anglican
  • area: 47 square miles

  • population: 260
  • ethnic groups: Western Europeans
  • religion: Anglican and Roman Catholic
  • area:80 square miles

  • population: 800
  • religion: Christian
  • area: 34 square miles

  • I stumbled upon an online book about some lady living in Saint Helena. She described her breakfasts as pretty western. They included porridge, Grape Nuts, toast, and fried eggs. I decided to go with an apple porridge.

    Apple Porridge
    1/2 cup oatmeal
    1 cup water
    1/2 an apple
Mix the water and oatmeal together in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave for 2 minutes. Meanwhile, peel and cube the apple. Stir the apple cubes into the oatmeal and serve warm.
